In 2024, I worked with the presidential campaign’s communications team, primarily responsible for still photography.
Compared with the 2022 Taipei mayoral election, the scale and pressure were on an entirely different level. The core challenge shifted from “how do we shoot this scene” to “how do we redesign the entire workflow.”
The Workflow Challenge of a Cross-County Schedule
A presidential campaign’s schedule isn’t confined to a single city. A single day could span from south to north, from urban centers to rural townships, with transportation switching mode at every leg: high-speed rail, motorcade, on foot, even a shuttle boat.
Every transition between modes of transport was a potential break point in the workflow:
- Still sending photos from the last stop while boarding the vehicle to the next one
- Backing up and transferring files on the move, in real time
- Using dead time in transit to finish editing and sending material already shot
None of this could be solved through individual effort alone. The only way through was to break the process into fine-grained steps, define exactly what to do in each situation, and let the system — not the individual — carry the load.
The Pressure of Real-Time Delivery, Raised a Level
At the mayoral level, real-time delivery was already high-pressure — the moment a candidate landed a soundbite, social media needed the matching image.
At the presidential level, add another layer: international media.
International outlets don’t hand you a spec sheet to work through at leisure — their requirement is simple: get the photo out, fast. The moment an event wrapped, they were already waiting. Often the same shot had to go out through multiple channels simultaneously:
- Ready-to-post social assets (vertical, horizontal, clean, and captioned versions)
- Domestic press photos (high-resolution, both unedited and color-graded)
- International media (speed above all else)
No single photographer could keep up with this by working faster. This is the phase where we truly matured the workflow — covering on-site division of labor, real-time file transfer, preset color grades, and channel-specific delivery pipelines.
The Side Effect of a Mature Workflow
After the campaign ended, we discovered something unexpected: the workflow we built for the presidential race could migrate to any scenario that was high-stakes, unrepeatable, and had multiple parties waiting on the same material.
- The 2025 closing ceremony of the World Masters Games in Taipei/New Taipei: a stadium of ten thousand people, fireworks that fire only once
- Corporate IPO launch events, international blockchain conferences, annual company summits: every one has a defining moment that expires the instant it isn’t delivered
Same method, different arena.
What Two Elections Built On Each Other
If the 2022 embedded-crew period built muscle memory for campaign rhythm and decision-making logic, then 2024 was where that muscle memory turned into a system — scalable, delegable.
From individual capability to institutional capability. This is also the underlying reason Tzukao has been able to hold up under high-pressure, live-event work ever since.
